Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) was a German painter, an exponent of nineteenth-century European Romanticism.

The Wanderer above the Sea of Fog is his most famous work; it is an oil painting on canvas from 1918, an icon of Romantic painting, and a representation of the 'sublime'. A man, with his back to us, is standing on the edge of a rock contemplating the surrounding landscape. The silhouette of the traveller stands out in the mist and the surrounding nature, impervious and melancholic, is composed of glimpses of rock and mountain peaks.
